PNA Home Fair & Well Home Classes offer Info & Inspiration

Sunday, January 29 is the PNA Home Design & Remodel Fair!
Join us from 10 am - 4 pm for a full day of ideas and inspiration, as well as all the info you need to get started (or finished) on your remodeling plans. In addition to 90+ exhibitors, DPD permit specialists, door prizes and refreshments, we also offer a great line-up of presentations throughout the day. Admission is $10 for general public, $6 for PNA members. Children 12 and under are free. The event is at the Phinney Neighborhood Center, 6532 Phinney Ave N.

Whether you attend the fair and want more in-depth information, or if you can't make the event but still have remodeling questions, we have nine Well Home Program classes scheduled in February and March. Check out the online schedule and call 206.783.2244 to register!

Annual Meeting Wrap-Up and News

It was so nice to see so many of our members at the Annual Meeting and Pancake Breakfast. If you were unable to make it, the following includes a recap of the main portion of presentations, PNA's latest addition, the Village.

Having been up-and-running for a few weeks already, the PNA Village is "aging-in-place" program allowing citizens to remain in their home longer while staying active and engaged as they age. Villages have been popping up throughout the United States over the past several years as unique ways to connect volunteers and vetted services with neighborhood members. The PNA Village will have three primary program areas: a network of helpers to assist on day-to-day tasks, an information and referral hot line established to link vendors and services with your specific needs, and community building activities. More thorough descriptions of these programs are available to you through the PNA website. If you are interested in joining, PNA is currently accepting membership applications. Because the PNA Village is serviced mainly by volunteers, there are many ways you can help! Volunteers provide much of the talent and energy behind the Village; within the next year, we are hoping to get upwards of 170 volunteers to help with the programs, organization, and coordination of these services. The PNA Village is intended to create a culture of interdependence and a spirit of mutual support between both members and volunteers. We will be holding a PNA Village Volunteer Kick-Off Event on Sunday, February 26 from 1:30-3:30pm at the PNC Brick Building. Come learn about the opportunities that you have as members and volunteers, eat some tasty snacks and listen to chosen speakers. Please RSVP at 206.789.1217.

San Francisco Bay Area musician Bill Evans is well known within the acousticand bluegrass music community not only as an outstanding banjo player, butalso as a teacher, writer and scholar. The Banjo in America concert bringstogether these interests in a unique presentation designed for the concertstage that’s for all audiences. Tracing the banjo from its West African rootsto the New World, Evans performs musical examples from the 1700’s to the presentday on a variety of vintage instruments, ranging from an African ekontingto a mid-19th century minstrel banjo, a modern bluegrass banjo and even anelectric banjo. In the process, Bill explains how the banjo has been at theintersection of African- and Anglo-American musical and cultural exchangefor over 250 years. From an 18th century African dance tune to the music ofthe Civil War, and from early 20th century ragtime to folk and bluegrass banjostyles to Bill’s own incredible original music, The Banjo in America informswhile it entertains, exposing audiences to over 200 years of American music.

Over a performing career that now spans over thirty years, Bill has performedwith Dry Branch Fire Squad, Peter Rowan, Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum, MariaMuldaur, Robin and Linda Williams, Kathy Kallick Band, the Lynn Morris Bandand The Jim Hurst Band among others, and for the last two years, Bill drewcapacity crowds all across the country with fiddler Megan Lynch.

Evans has presented The Banjo In America at Kobe Shoin Women's University,Kobe, Japan; the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH; Carleton College,Northfield, MN; Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA; Clarion MusicCenter, San Francisco, CA; Border Folk Festival, El Paso, TX; Columbia GorgeMixed Bag Music Festival, Stevenson, WA; the Maryland Banjo Academy, Buckeystown,MD; South Plains College, Levelland, TX; the Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival,Gettysburg, PA; the Mid-Winter Bluegrass Festival, Denver, CO and Wintergrass,Tacoma, WA. The Banjo in America was developed with the support of a grantfrom the Kentucky Humanities Council.
Bill holds a Master’s Degree in Music from the University of California, Berkeleyand completed the coursework for the PhD. He has taught in the music departmentsat San Francisco State University, the University of Virginia and Duke Universityand has been an artist/scholar in residence at the University of Richmondand Fairfield University.

You are invited to a free screening of this award-winning local film featuring 26 queer youth sharing their thoughts and feelings about gender and sexuality. The Safe Schools Coalition, PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), and Teen Link will be on hand to share resources, along with the filmmakers. Whether you identify yourself as straight or queer or prefer no label at all, whether you are 14 years old, 84 years young or “ageless”, you are welcome at this event.

One of the unique and wonderful elements of the PNA Home Design & Remodeling Fair is the participation of the City of Seattle's Department of Planning & Development (DPD). From 10 am - 4 pm on Sunday, January 29 a full complement of permitting specialists will be on hand to answer your questions! No need to go downtown, take a number, and wonder who can help with your project. In one room you can circulate among the DPD staffers and get advice and info to help you on your way.

Esprit de Print will be open at the Phinney Center Gallery on January 4th. The opening reception will be held Friday, January 13th from 7:00-9:00 pm.
Come meet the artists!

Esprit de Print is a group show of original prints by one of Seattle Print Arts art salons. Each of the nine members has a unique artistic voice. They meet monthly to share information on printmaking techniques and discuss their work. This show hopes to demystify the art of printmaking as it celebrates the diversity of original works on paper.

A Fairy Tale Brew-story: Reuben’s Brews Takes Phinney by Storm (Again)

We started as the ugly duckling. One of only two homebrewers invited to the Phinney Neighborhood Association Beer Taste in November 2010 (Beer Trek), we sheepishly prepared our meager set up next to the likes of Sierra Nevada, Ninkasi, and many other breweries we’ve known and loved for years. As the doors opened the very eager beer lovers made the rounds to select which beers would merit their ten precious beer tickets… and when they asked where we were located, we had to work on a response that sounded better than “our garage.” We were a completely unknown brewery called Reuben’s Brews, named after our son. Despite their trepidation some surrendered a ticket, and more importantly they liked what they tasted, our Roasted Rye PA. Word spread, the tipping point was reached, and we left as swans that evening, the recipients of the People’s Choice Award.

Flash forward one year, and we felt a little akin to Cinderella, left behind as her stepsisters (neither ugly nor evil in this case) were whisked away to enjoy the ball. A change in the policy meant that homebrewers were no longer invited to pour at the PNA Beer Taste, so we were enjoying the event from the other side, as eager beer lovers. It was, as always, a magnificent event where beer enthusiasts—from the aficionados to the recreational lovers—are invited to sample a wide variety of the region’s best beers. Luckily our fairy godmother, Anacortes Brewery, helped us get to the ball. After we won Best of Show at the Skagit County Fair, Anacortes invited Adam to brew his recipe on their equipment, and the result was an American Brown Rye, a cousin of sorts to the Roasted Rye PA that Reuben’s Brews poured the year before. The rye adds a unique twist and crisp finish when combined with specialty British malts. It just so happened that the batch was ready in time for this year’s PNA Beer Taste, and what an amazing bonus that our recipe, the Anacortes Brewery’s America Brown Rye, won the People’s Choice Award! That makes the second year in a row that our beer won, a proper fairy tale ending for a magical night!

What started as a labour of love on a small system in our garage has burgeoned into an award-winning brewery. We always enjoyed the fruits of our own labour, and we never had trouble finding willing drinkers among our friends and family. Once we started receiving recognition at competitions, we decided to turn our obsession into our profession. We love crafting brilliantly tasty artisan ales, and as long as people love drinking them, we are committed to making them available. Look forward to a new Reuben’s Brews taproom—not in our garage—opening in summer 2012.

Community Announcement from the Seattle Office of Emergency Management

Nationwide Test of Emergency Alert System

Don’t be alarmed if your favorite TV or radio show gets interrupted next Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 11 a.m. (2 p.m. EST) More than 20,000 television and radio broadcast stations across the country are participating in the first-ever, nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS). The test will last approximately 30 seconds.

In the event of a national catastrophe, the EAS would activate, allowing the President of the United States to address millions of people at the same time. The system is similar to that most commonly used by state and local officials for Amber Alerts and weather alerts.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) are conducting the test. They have provided a number of helpful resources for people to learn more about what to expect. Japanese Cultural Event at the PNA

Join us on Wednesday evening for a look at the history and experiences of Japanese Americans in Hawaii and Washington State. We'll be hearing from Mary Matsuda Gruenewald, reading from her book Looking Like the Enemy, a memoir of growing up on Vashon Island and being sent with her family to internment camps. We'll also be watching the film Great Grandfather's Drum, featuring taiko drummers in Hawaii. Join us for a discussion with the filmmakers, Japanese snacks donated by Central Market, and buy the book or DVD if you'd like to learn more. This event will be held from 7-9 pm in the Community Hall of the Brick Building at the Phinney Neighborhood Center. FREE!

Wow! We are once again struck by the level of generosity in our community. Many thanks to everyone who recently donated school supplies and new clothes to students at Whitman Middle School and Treehouse at the Phinney Center and Greenwood Elementary at the Greenwood Senior Center. Celebrate 30 Years with Fun and Laughter

Where were you 30 years ago? In October 1981, the Phinney Neighborhood Center and the Phinney Neighborhood Preschool Co-op opened their doors in a recently closed elementary school. Today, 30 years later, both the Center and the preschool are integral to the Phinney-Greenwood neighborhood. Many of us couldn’t imagine the neighborhood without them.

On Oct. 1 and 2, we’re celebrating that fact . It'l be weekend of celebration for both the Center and the preschool with activities for both young and old:

Ridge Romp – Saturday, Oct 1, at 10:30 am

This popular children’s entertainment series was started by preschool parents several years ago. This celebration show features Johnny Bregar who creates “music for kids that parents will love.” Tickets to the show are $3/person. Doors open at 10 am and organizers recommend that you arrive early; shows often sell out.

Phinney Center Stage – Saturday, Oct. 1, at 7 pm

The fun continues with Phinney Center Stage, an evening of improv comedy featuring the touring company from Taproot Theatre.

Doors will open at 7 pm for a social hour with an opportunity to catch up with old friends. Community members and current and past PNA members are all invited to attend but Board members, preschool families and PNA volunteers are particularly encouraged. The event will include designated “hospitality rooms” in the Center for both Board and preschool to “increase the odds” of seeing former classmates and Boardmates.

At 8 pm, the party moves to a tent in the Phinney Center upper parking lot where, by using suggestions from the audience, the quick witted actors of Taproot Theatre’s Improvisational Comedy Team will create, on the spot, scene after comedic scene filled with fun and laughs. Intermission includes an array of desserts and then it’s back to the improv.

FARMERS MARKET SEASON EXTENDED!
Based on polling of shoppers and market vendors, the Neighborhood Farmers Market Alliance has decided to add two weeks to the Phinney Farmers Market season. With a slow start to the growing season (remember "Junuary"?), we hope this will help you fill your kitchens with great late-ripening produce and other tasty goods, while assisting the farmers with an additional opportunity to earn some income.

On October 14 and 21 the market will close one hour early, so be sure to do your shopping between 3 and 6 pm while it is still light out. We decided that it was worth it to continue operations, even with reduced hours, but the vendors will need all the twilight to pack up and get ready to drive home. We hope you can make it before 6 pm!

Regular hours of 3-7 pm continue through Friday, October 7, which was originally scheduled to be our final day. We still plan to hold our PNA Harvest Potluck on October 7 from 6:30-8:30 pm.

Great Turnout For First Alzheimer Café

The first Alzheimer Café in Seattle made its debut on Tuesday, August 9. 30 guests filled one of the rooms at Mae’s Phinney Ridge Café after hours and enjoyed an afternoon of conversation, community and of course some of Mae’s delicious desserts.

Modeled after a large movement in Europe and only one other established café in the US, the Alzheimer Café is a café for people with memory loss and their care partners providing an outlet for interaction, an opportunity to get out and socialize in a safe environment. No judgment, no expectation…just support, good food and fun!

This Alzheimer Café is created and run by the Greenwood Senior Center, a program of the Phinney Neighborhood Association. The Alzheimer Café will take place on the 2nd Tuesday of the month from 3:30-5 pm and will be held at Mae’s Phinney Ridge Café, 6412 Phinney Avenue N. No reservations are necessary and the only cost is your dessert and/or drink. There is neighborhood parking available including at the Phinney Neighborhood Center just north of the café at the corner of 67th and Phinney.

Community Dialog through Theater: "Brownie Points" at Greenwood’s Taproot Theater

In fact; it’s a conversation about the need to have a conversation.”

The PNA wanted to take an opportunity to highlight an event in our community that we feel is very important: the Taproot Theater’s current show Brownie Points and its corresponding community conversations. The play Brownie Points is about five mothers with different racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds who are on a camping trip together and spend a night talking about these differences, as well as the shared experience of motherhood. The play’s director Karen Lund has explained, “This story provides a safe place to ask ourselves some of our hardest social questions.”

The PNA has similarly aimed to create a comfortable space for community conversation about racial and social justice issues through our Cultural Engagement Film Series.

The Taproot Theater, in addition to its show, has concurrent opportunities for community members to participate in guided, collaborative discussions exploring themes in Brownie Points. Following the Thursday evening shows, there is an opportunity for audience members to stay and engage with each other in conversation.

Furthermore, there is a free event at the Taproot Theater in conjunction with the show on Monday June 13 from 7-9pm, at the Taproot Theater. It is titled “Neighbors and Strangers: Discussing Diversity and the Experience of Race in Seattle.” Admission is free, RSVP required to Sonja Lowe at 206-529-3666, sonjal@taproottheatre.org

According to the 2010 Census data, Seattle is both the fifth whitest city in the United States and also the city with the most racially diverse zip code. Ours is a city living a historical legacy and current experience of racism, including once legally sanctioned racial segregation, as well as Sunset Laws on the north side of town. There is special work being done to combat today’s racism, for example through the City of Seattle’s Race and Social Justice Initiative, the People’s Institute Northwest, YWCA, Solid Ground, and the Coalition of Anti-Racist Whites. We feel that the opportunity for community conversation is an integral part of working for equitable communities, an equitable city, and a just society. To that end, it is important that these conversations happen throughout our city, and we are grateful to Taproot Theater for creating an additional opportunity for this discussion to take place in our neighborhood – as they so eloquently put it, amongst both neighbors and strangers – some of which may be both to us at the same time.

End of Bike Month, Beginning of Bike Summer!

PNA staff just enjoyed a month-long Commute Challenge to make as many commute trips by alternative modes as possible. Between 22 staff who participated, we recorded 206 round trips by walking, biking, riding transit, or carpooling during the month of May. We also learned the adults love stickers too. Way to go PNA staff!

Our challenge coincided with the popular Group Health Commute Challenge to encourage biking during bike month, and for the first time, the PNA fielded a team of 6 people, who biked half of their commute trips, for a total of 60 trips and 227.5 miles. We competed against Team Bard Seattle from 74th Street Productions, who kicked our butts in every category. On Bike-to-Work Day, on May 20th, we counted over 200 cyclists who came by our station in Heart of Phinney Park. Way to go Phinney-Greenwood!

The PNA Staff Commute Challenge and Bike Month activities were part of our larger campaign, the Green Planet Travel Agency, which encourages alternative transportation in our neighborhood and especially to PNA events. Besides the purely practical (the PNA has a large parking lot that sometimes overflows to the neighborhood street), we promote alternatives because we have a commitment to sustainability, and we think it betters the neighborhood and builds community.

Farmer’s Markets
What’s better than a nice relaxing walk or bike ride on a Friday afternoon? One that stops at the Phinney Farmer’s Market along the way! Make sure to have a strategy for carrying your purchases home—walkers can bring sturdy, reusable bags or baskets, and bikers can try baskets, panniers, backpacks, or even a milk crate or produce box bungeed to a rear rack.

PNA Home & Garden Tour
The homes are close, and parking can be a challenge, so why not walk or bike the tour? You can carpool or bus to the Phinney Center to get started, and take off from there on foot.

Summer Beer Taste
As you may know, 10 “tastes” is a lot of beer, so make sure you have a plan for getting home safely after this event. Get together with some friends to carpool, because designated drivers get a reduced ticket price. Walking and transit are both great choices. Biking under the influence is not a safe alternative, so if you bike, make sure you are doing so safely. Plus, If you walk, bike, ride, or carpool, you’ll get a chance to show off (hint: what’s colorful and sticky?).

Art Journals for Busy People, June 25th at the PNA

A journal can be many things: a record of daily events, a history of one’s life, even a place to work through complex thoughts and feelings. While many people like the concept of keeping a journal, staring down at a blank page can be intimidating. What should I write? Where do I start? Tina Koyama is leading a workshop at the PNA (Art Journals for Busy People) that will help answer these questions and provide a variety of creative methods and approaches to journaling.

Koyama’s workshop offers ideas for individuals who want to keep a journal but may not feel that they have the time. She teaches techniques that will enable participants to begin, and maintain, a journal in just 20-30 minutes a day. Koyama says an art journal can be, “anything you want it to be – a daily record of your life; a travel journal; a sketchbook that also contains your writing; your creative writing illustrated with drawings, collage or paintings; a modern-day scrapbook of mementoes and memories.”

Art Journals for Busy People will introduce several journaling techniques. Participants will have a chance to engage in some fast and fun writing exercises and experiment with different art media and collage. Participants can expect to leave this innovative workshop with:

Instructions for making a personalize journal cover (see photos below)
A handout of ideas for both art and writing
Inspiration from samples of Koyama’s personal journals

PNA Capital Campaign Cut From State Budget

Yesterday, the State Legislature passed the 2011-2013 Capital Budget. Unfortunately, it did not include PNA's grant request of $995,000 for the Blue Building Renovation project. Last July, the Washington State Historical Society Advisory Board recommended our request for full funding through the Heritage Capital Projects Fund. Funding for these projects has been appropriated without fail since 1997. Not this year, however.

Despite strong advocacy efforts, we were caught up in issues beyond our control. The Capital Budget only includes $1.2 million for Heritage Projects, enough to fund the first nine of 29 proposed projects.

Thank you to everyone who contacted their legislators in support of PNA's project -- we had a lot of positive responses and support from our elected officials! While this news creates a challenge for the Capital Campaign, we are determined to continue moving forward and confident that our community will rise to this challenge.

Do you drive to the Phinney Neighborhood Center Blue Building on Fridays? Beginning next week (June 3) the Phinney Farmers Market will take place in the upper parking lot from 3-7 pm. Morning drop-off and short-term parking will be no problem, although some spaces will be blocked off to accommodate early-arriving trucks. Set-up for market vendors begins at 1 pm so ALL CARS must be out of the lot by this time. We really don't want to tow anyone's car, so please park in the lower lot or be sure to move your vehicle out of the upper lot well before 1 pm. Thanks for your cooperation!

It’s raining, it’s pouring… hooray!

If there’s one thing we have in Seattle, it’s rain. And lots of it. According to the National Weather Service (http://www.weather.gov/climate/index.php?wfo=sew) we have had 21.4 inches of rain so far in 2011 (higher than the annual average from January-May, which is 17.43 inches). While we might appreciate that rain keeps our city’s plants and trees green and beautiful, most of us simply let the rain run down our gutters and into the street without giving it a second thought. Did you know that there is a way to capture that rain and use it to flush toilets, even do laundry? Could doing so result in lower water bills? An improved environment? Well, the PNA is offering an exciting, informative class to answer these questions, and many more.

The PBS documentary series Unnatural Causes investigates the root causes of our alarming socio-economic and racial inequities in health. The series uncovers startling new findings that suggest there is much more to our health than bad habits, health care, or unlucky genes. The social circumstances in which we are born, live, and work can actually get under our skin and disrupt our physiology as much as germs and viruses.

“In Sickness and in Wealth,” the hour-long opening episode, paints the big picture. Set in Louisville, Kentucky, it is a story about health, but it's not about doctors or drugs. It's about why some of us get sicker more often and die sooner in the first place. What are the connections between healthy bodies and healthy bank accounts and skin color? How do social policies and the way we organize work and society affect health? Solutions, the show suggests, lie not in more pills but in more equality. "In Sickness and In Wealth" sets out the series' main themes: that health and longevity are correlated with socio-economic status, that people of color face an additional health burden, and that our health and well-being are tied to policies that promote economic and social justice.

The film series explores society’s social institutions and how systems and behavior perpetuate and reinforce discriminatory practices and inequities. In less than a month we can reinstate the Friday ritual walk to the Phinney Neighborhood Center for fresh food and friendly exchanges with neighbors. June 3 is opening day (3-7 pm) and we've got some fun entertainment and special visitors planned. However interesting they may be, let's remember that the local farmers and producers are really the *STARS* of the show! The beginning of the season is very weather-dependent and we know it hasn't been great this spring. Let's all make a special effort to get out and support our faithful market vendors early in the summer, knowing we'll be rewarded as the weeks go by.... just think of those fragrant berries, shining tomatoes, and sweet corn!

In case you haven't already heard, the market is moving up the hill to our upper parking lot, much closer to Phinney Avenue. We're also welcoming dogs (and their well-behaved owners) back to the market for the 2011 season. Kick Off Bike Month Tonight!

When I walked in to the office this morning, I saw a site that warmed my heart: the bike rack was full. The recently installed rack outside the "front" door of the blue buidling had three bikes locked to it, two of them outfitted with extra seats for some kiddos. Don't worry, I just parked on the streetside rack, and we have plenty of room along the railings in front of both the Blue and Brick Buildings.

Yes, May is Bike Month, and I hope to be seeing more and more bikes on our racks as May progesses. To celebrate Bike Month, we're starting with a Kick-Off Potluck tonight (Wednesday, May 4) at 6pm in Community Hall in the Brick Building. All are welcome, whether you bike everyday, or you don't have a bike at all!

This month, we're also challenging neighbors to compete with us in the Group Health Commute Challenge, and we're inviting all of you to try bike commuting on Bike to Work Day on May 20, when you can stop by our commute station in Heart Of Phinney Park.

The PNA staff is also learning to walk the walk (and bike the bike, and ride the, er, bus). We're holding our very own Staff Commute Challenge that encourages walking, biking, riding transit and carpooling to work and meetings in the month of May. Join us!

Hey Phinney-Greenwood: Take the Challenge!

As the weather (finally) warms up, here at the PNA we’re getting ready for Bike Month in May. For the first time, the PNA will be fielding a team for the Group Health Commute Challenge, a month-long challenge organized by the Cascade Bicycle Club. Each team member commits to biking to work at least four times during the month, and the more miles we bike, the higher we rank against other teams throughout Seattle. There are great prizes and events, plus the fun of joining over 10,000 other bike commuters in the region during the month.

We’re issuing a challenge to our neighbors, both businesses and residents: form a team and compete with us in the Commute Challenge this May! When you sign up, join the Phinney-Greenwood “League” through the online portal, and we’ll see who bikes the most miles, the most days, and who recruits the most new commuters.

If you do start bike commuting, make sure to stop by our commute station on May 20, Bike to Work Day. We'll be set up in Heart of Phinney Park at 67th & Greenwood from 6-9am.

Urban Light Studios Serves Up 'Potluck' Art Exhibit During Art Walk

Every Artist Brings Something to the Table in this Group Show

More than 30 Seattle area artists will bring something to the table for “Potluck” a new mixed media exhibit at URBAN LIGHT STUDIOS opening Friday May 13 6 – 10 pm) and extending through Saturday May 14 (noon-6pm) during the BIG May Greenwood-Phinney Art Walk.

During this exhibit, URBAN LIGHT STUDIOS will also host a raffle to raise money for our neighbors and friends at the Greenwood Food Bank. To participate in the raffle, guests will be invited to donate $1 or a non-perishable food item. Art lovers can win raffle prizes from sponsors Vans Shoes, Boundary Bay Brewery (Bellingham), Snowboard Connection, Mighty-O-Donuts, Nectar Lounge, Scream Salon, Family Fortune Clothing, Electric Coffin, Paper Diamonds Clothing as well as featured art work from participating artists and much more.

Urban Cycling Techniques, April 27th and 30th

Biking is a great way to get around Seattle. In fact, the Seattle Department of Transportation estimates that approximately 36% of Seattle's 520,000 citizens engage in recreational bicycling, and between 4,000 and 8,000 people bicycle commute in Seattle each day (http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/bikeprogram.htm). According to an article in Bicycling, Seattle is ranked 4th out of America’s Top 50 Bike Friendly Cities. Seattle currently has “about 45 miles of shared use paths, 120 miles of on-street, striped bike lanes and sharrows, and about 120 miles of signed bike routes.” (Seattle Department of Transportation, http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/bikeprogram.htm). Seattle is also working on a Bicycle Master Plan (scheduled to be completed in 2016) that aims to increase bike usage and access and decrease the number of bike accidents.

But, no matter how many bike lanes there may be, if you don’t have the information and skills you need, biking in the city can feel intimidating. Do I ride with the traffic or next to it? What if there isn’t a bike lane? How do I clearly let cars know when I intend to turn? If you’re like me and find this all a little daunting, then the Urban Cycling Techniques course at the PNA, in partnership with the Cascade Bicycle Club, may be what you’ve been looking for.

Through this course, recreational or transportational cyclists will gain the knowledge to make informed decisions while riding in traffic and the confidence to balance caution, assertiveness and the skills necessary for safer urban riding. The course is just in time to help you prepare for Bike Month (May 2011), when over 10,000 people participate in the Group Health Commute Challenge. This class will give you the skills you need to start commuting next month.

The evening lecture session (on Wednesday, April 27th, 6-9pm) will be followed by an on-your-bike practice session—bring a working bike and proper helmet to the Saturday (April 30th, 10am-3pm) session.

Film Summary
The lives and challenges of LGBT elders is the focus of Ten More Good Years. Directed and produced by the president of LookOut Film, Inc., Michael Jacoby, the film introduces LGBT elders who share stories of their lives and LGBT history. Their stories reveal governmental and social injustices, making visible what being gay is now and what being gay and growing old in the United States will be. A generation of LGBT people who fought for their right to be out, proud, and equal are being forced back into the closet and silenced once again. The elders interviewed in the film share their concerns for their own future and for future generations of LGBT men and women. The goal of the discussion is to spark deeper conversations about how the community can understand and support LGBT elders.

2011 Local Giving Fair -- Looking for Planning Committee Volunteers!

The Greenwood Senior Center is very excited to begin gathering volunteers for the second annual Local Giving Fair. The Local Giving Fair is a project of the Greenwood Senior Center’s civic engagement program and provides a space for local non-profit organizations working on a range of social justice, environmental, and human rights issues to connect with community members wishing to learn more and make donations to support these projects.

Currently, we are looking for people interested in offering their skills as committee members. Volunteering as a committee member is a great way to get event planning experience for a special community event and to support organizations addressing social justice and human rights issues in our community, all the while working with a wonderful group of fellow volunteers.

The senior center will be holding a community meeting for people interested in learning more about the Local Giving Fair and what volunteering as a committee member entails on Wednesday, May 4th, from noon-1pm at the Green Bean Coffee House (8533 Greenwood Ave. N, Seattle 98103). The Green Bean provides delicious lunch and other snacks that you can purchase. Otherwise, feel free to bring a bagged lunch if you’d like to eat. Bike Maintenance Class Next Week

The PNA has partnered with Cascade Bicycle Club to bring a Basic Bike Maintenance class to the neighborhood. On Wednesday, April 20, 7-9pm you can bring your bike to Community Hall for hands-on maintenance experience.

Village Volunteers seeking recommendations

The PNA Village is a new program in development to help support community members who prefer to stay in their own homes as they age. One program component is referrals to reputable, local service providers (individuals, businesses, organizations) in various categories. All providers will be screened before being added to our referral list, so we do prefer those who are licensed, insured, bonded, etc. although exceptions may be made. Our volunteer Referrals & Partnerships Committee is currently seeking suggestions in three areas:

“Drop-off” computer troubleshooting and repairs

• Businesses or individuals that will come to your home and feed your pet (and perhaps take in your mail and newspaper)

Bring Comfort and Joy to Kids in Need!

Hooray for spring, a time for celebration! Are you looking ahead to a holiday, milestone, or other special occasion sometime soon? Whether you are shopping around for spring holiday treats for a little child, a birthday present, or a graduation gift, we ask you to remember the young people in our community whose families can't provide gifts on such special occasions.

Childhaven and Broadview Emergency Shelter are Seattle-based agencies that provide vital services for children and teens affected by domestic abuse, child abuse, neglect, homelessness, poverty, and other tough challenges. Each year, the PNA hosts a gift drive to supply special treats for these agencies to give to children to brighten a special day.

Help us bring comfort and joy to kids in need. Purchase a new item you think a child aged infant through 18 years would enjoy. Ideas include craft supplies, toys, books, puzzles, board games, video games, journals, sports, equipment, mp3 players, and gift cards to stores such as Fred Meyer, Barnes and Noble, iTunes, and Supercuts. More specific suggestions are on display at the Phinney Center.

Return unwrapped donations to the Phinney Center or Greenwood Senior Center by Thursday, April 14. The gift will be delivered to an appreciative young person on a special day in their lives.

PNA Funding At Risk - Call Your Senator by April 7th

Good news! This week’s House Capital Budget fully funded the Heritage Capital Projects Fund, 29 projects from around the state including $995,000 for PNA’s Blue Building Renovation. While this is exciting news, we’re not done yet. With over $5 million raised to date, this grant is very significant in reaching our goal of $7 million to complete Phase II of the Community Begins Here Capital Campaign.

We need your help today to ensure this level of funding from the Senate. The Senate is finalizing the budget as we speak. It is URGENT that your Senators hear how important it is to you – their constituents – that their budget fully funds the HCPF.

NOW is the time to act. In the next 24 hours, please contact your Senators by email or phone to send these TWO simple messages:

1) Please fund the HCPF at the same level as the House – the full $10 million; and
2) Ask them to contact Senator Kilmer with the message that this is a high priority for their district (Sen. Kilmer is Vice-chair and lead on putting together the Capital budget).

Some tips we learned in Olympia this morning about how to MOST effectively contact our Senators during this time-sensitive period:

• Your email “Subject” line should indicate that you are a constituent from their district;
• Be sure to personalize in some way your email (e.g. mention the PNA’s project); and
• Best method is to email your Senator; the second best method is to call his/her legislative aid directly. If you leave a message, be sure to indicate that you are a constituent!

Let’s Bike Phinney-Greenwood!

You asked for it—bike classes are coming to the PNA! In response to requests from the community, and to support our continuing efforts towards sustainability, the PNA has partnered with Cascade Bicycle Club to offer three bike classes in April. The classes will help participants get ready for spring biking and bike month in May.

To encourage biking in the neighborhood, the PNA, with the help of Sustainable Greenwood-Phinney, is organizing a campaign called Let’s Bike Phinney-Greenwood in April and May. In addition to the classes, the campaign will celebrate Bike Month with several neighborhood events. Find out more about the bike classes, and other spring classes on our website.
So why bike?

For Health. With warmer spring weather, biking makes great, enjoyable exercise. Three hours of biking per week reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke by 50%. Whether for recreation or transportation, biking can burn 400 calories per hour. Go up and down the ridge, and it may be significantly more than that!

To Save Money. Owning a car can cost $10,000 per year, including maintenance, insurance, depreciation, and fuel. Even if you don’t give up a car, relying more on biking for transportation insulates you from rising fuel costs.

For a Better Environment. Significant savings in greenhouse gas emissions are just one of many environmental benefits of biking. Driving less reduces other air pollutants, like carbon monoxide, nitrous oxides and particulate matter, and it reduces water pollution from non-point sources—the largest pollution sources in Puget Sound. Biking requires significantly less pavement for lanes and parking than driving does, creating less storm-water run-off which reduces water pollution and sewer overflows.

For Better Communities. Biking has significant benefits for communities. Bicyclists are more likely to spend money at local businesses, and the money they save on transportation frees up disposable income. About 12 bikes can be parked in one car space, so biking contributes to dense, walkable neighborhoods. Like walking, biking allows for more interaction on the streets, building community—which is what the PNA is all about.

The goal is to build a neighborhood not only where people can remain in their homes as long as they would like, but also a place where older adults can continue to engage in and with their community in a number of ways. This course offers basic, hands-on knowledge to help turn those mysterious pipes into an understandable system.

In part-one participants learn how to avoid, diagnose and repair basic plumbing problems with safety. Part-two will give the do-it-yourselfer plumber more confidence as you learn the legal and technical details for altering or replacing water supply lines, valves and supply tubes. You’ll even have the chance to practice what you learn with the PNA’s torch and solder! Part one will be held from 10:00 am-noon, and part two will be from noon-2:00 pm.

The PNA Soup Kitchen needs your help! We serve hundreds of meals each week and over time our dishes and flatware gradually get chipped, lost, or otherwise rendered unusable. Talk Time: Building Community across and through Language

This October, Talk Time – a program bringing together English language learners and English speaking facilitators – began at the Greenwood Senior Center.

Talk Time was originally started by the Tacoma Community House and continues at libraries and community organizations locally and across the country. It consists of conversation sessions for English language learning participants and volunteer facilitators. The goal of the sessions is to increase confidence among participants in using the English language. Talk Time differs from a traditional English as a Second Language classroom setting in that the facilitator’s role is to create opportunities for conversation and practice, not to teach lessons on structured speech. Communicating becomes more important than the form of the conversation. The terms “participant” and “facilitator” are used (rather than “teacher” and “student”) to emphasize that the relationship is based on sharing conversation, not transmitting information.

The mission of Talk Time at the Greenwood Senior Center is to provide a safe, non-threatening, and relaxed environment in which participants can practice and develop confidence in newly acquired English-speaking and listening skills and connect with community. The program aims to support a diverse group of English language learners of all ability levels and ages so that they communicate more confidently. Also, we particularly hope to provide a space for older adults who are new speakers of English and who live in the neighborhood.

The Greenwood Senior Center has been very lucky to have the support of three wonderful facilitators as well as a steady group of participants – from places such as Brazil, Russia, China, Romania, Japan, and Colombia.

One participant shared that she was shy at first about the idea of coming to the Greenwood Senior Center. Now, she says it is her favorite part of her week.

The program is as meaningful to facilitators as to participants. As one of our facilitators Fae says, “I think I get more out of it than the participants do.” It is about community building for everybody.

We are very grateful to have connections with many community organizations, such as the Seattle Public Library, St. James Cathedral, and the Chinese Information and Service Center. The Library has been tremendously supportive in providing advice, allowing us to learn about and model their program, and sharing materials and other opportunities. St. James Cathedral and the Chinese Information and Service Center have likewise helped tremendously with translations and outreach.

We invite readers to share information about Talk Time with English language learners who might be interested in joining us.

The lives and challenges of immigrants and refugees is the focus of Starting Again: Stories of Refugee Youth, which chronicles the lives of refugee youth in Washington State. Shot and edited by documentary filmmaker Jill Freidberg of Corrugated Films, the film features interviews with four youth from Burma, Nepal/Bhutan, Russia, and Somalia. Each youth shares stories, experiences, struggles and successes about life before and after resettling in the United States. In addition, viewers will learn about the circumstances that brought the youth and their families to the area, their initial resettlement experience, and ongoing challenges they face. This event is timely for several reasons. Immigration is a controversial topic in our society and the Census report shows a dramatic increase in minority and immigrant and refugee population in the region. The goal of the discussion is to spark deeper conversations about how the community can understand and support refugee students and families.

The Cultural Engagement Film Series presents screenings and discussions with a focus on racial and social justice issues. The film series explores society’s social institutions and how systems and behavior perpetuate and reinforce discriminatory practices and inequities. Through screenings and facilitated discussions, the PNA intends to build a comfortable community space for education and thought – provoking conversations about important social topics.

Phinney Neighborhood Center Earns Historic Status

This morning the Governor’s Advisory Council on Historic Preservation and the Washington State Department of Archaeology & Historic Preservation listed the John B. Allen property (better known to our community as the Phinney Neighborhood Center) on the Washington Heritage Register of Historic Places. The Council also recommended that the site be nominated for the National Register of Historic Places. The John B. Allen property is already a Seattle landmark. Board member Rhoda Lawrence championed these efforts over the last five years and came to Olympia with me to accept the certificate.

Interesting History of the Site
The John B. Allen property is significant its association with the Seattle Public School system and expression of shifting educational philosophy as demonstrated by the differences in plan between the two buildings that remain virtually unchanged since their original construction and thus represent two different architectural periods of school design. The buildings show the shift from the simple, easily constructed wood-frame structure, to a new technique of masonry and concrete “fire-proof construction” adopted only 13 years later as a safer construction type. The two buildings reflect the general change in the choice of architectural style for new school buildings, from the Colonial Revival style of the 1904 building to the simplified interpretation of the Italian Renaissance style of the 1918 building.

The pair of buildings clearly contrasts the first model plan of stacked classrooms surrounding a central core to the later preferred linear model arrangement of classrooms allowing for more efficient use of space, easier circulation, and increased access to natural light and ventilation. The differing plans also demonstrate the shift from the general classroom education philosophy to the incorporation of specialty educational functions and assembly spaces, which could provide multi-use facilities to the wider community.

The Seattle School District purchased the subject property for $1,850 in 1902, when it was an unplotted three-acre site, in order to provide a new school for the growing neighborhood. Prior to that time, several children were being taught in the private living room of house on Green Lake Way. The new school, named Park School for its proximity to Woodland Park, was a grouping of three portable buildings that housed 99 students in grades one through seven. The new permanent building constructed in 1904 was named for John Beard Allen, Washington’s first U.S. Senator. A lawyer, J.B. Allen was from Indiana by way of Walla Walla. He was instrumental in the construction of the Naval Ship yard in Bremerton and the development of Fort Lawton and construction of the Lake Washington Ship Canal in Seattle.

The new school was constructed in a way that was intended to allow for expansion as student enrollment increased. When Phinney Avenue was widened in 1911, it reduced the area of the site to the west and placed physical restrictions on the expansion opportunities for the building, and resulted in the wooden structure appearing substantially lower than street level. This changed the physical approach to the building. In 1917, rather than adding to the existing building as demand for classroom space grew, the District chose to construct the “modern” brick building on the lower eastern portion of the site, along Dayton Avenue North, and to join the two buildings by using the large expanse of site in between as play areas with connecting stairways.

Enrollment peaked in 1932-33 at 758 but by 1944, the 1904 structure was noted as having “outlived its usefulness.” Over time, the school’s emphasis shifted to the 1918 brick building, and the older building was closed to regular elementary classes. In 1972, an alternative school—the Allen Free School—was opened in a portable on the site and offered a variety of learning approaches. In 1977, the Allen Free School became the Allen-Orca Alternative School for grades K through 5, and by 1980 had a waiting list of 70. Unfortunately, due to declining traditional student enrollment, decreasing federal funding, and determination that the building would be unsafe in a seismic event, the School District closed the Allen School in early 1981.

It was subsequently leased as a community facility by the Phinney Neighborhood Association, and the Phinney Neighborhood Center was born. PNA was able to purchase the site in 2009 and is currently raising funds to finally make the Blue Building accessible, creating a living enduring space that allows people of all ages and ability to gather and share their lives, ideas and experiences.

Big Bertha
The air-raid siren tower at the northwest corner of the site was one of many installed in Seattle in 1952-53 to warn citizens of incoming Soviet missiles or atomic bombs. During World War II, Seattle installed 63 air raid sirens, most small enough to attach to telephone poles. Placed in storage after the war, all working sirens reappeared in the early 1950s when tensions mounted with the Soviet Union. The City added 21 more, including several enormous sirens mounted on steel towers, after Seattle Mayor William Devin promised “the best air-raid warning system of any city of our size in America.”

Phinney’s “Big Bertha” was installed on April 22, 1953. Chrysler built the five-horsepower, 5,542-pound siren, and the Seattle Department of Engineering put it in place. With her gas-powered engine, Big Bertha could top 130 decibels and be heard over a mile and a half away. Wednesday noon siren tests were conducted until the early 1970s: three minutes of an extremely loud, pulsating, undulating tone, followed by a blast of sound lasting one minute, two minutes of silence, a second one-minute blast, two more minutes of silence, and finally a one-minute blast to mean “all clear.” During the tests, students at the John B. Allen Elementary School were required to curl up under their desks and hold a heavy book over their heads.

Community Members Explore Racism at the Cultural Engagement Film Series at the Phinney Neighborhood Association (PNA)

On Sunday February 27, the Phinney Neighborhood Association was packed with over 50 people who had come to view “The House We Live In,” the third episode from the documentary series Race: The Power of an Illusion. In the facilitated discussion following the film, attendees talked about the issues raised in the film and shared personal feelings about how racism and discrimination have affected them on a mental and emotional level. In addition, other topics included how the racism illuminated in the film affects their perception of society today and what can be done to fight against racism in our society.

At the conclusion of the program, attendees were asked to write down and name one thing they wanted to do because of attending the event. Here is a sample of some of the responses:

“I am going to stand with immigrant farm workers in voicing the racism we experience in the U.S.”

“I will make more of an effort to get informed, attend events and participate in discussions.”

“Being more vocal when I hear people around me make racist remarks or jokes by questioning those stereotypes and ways of thinking.”

“Teach what race is (and is not) in Biology class.”

“As President of the African American Student Union, I wish to show this film and have a discussion at my university to expand the students’ way of thinking, then brainstorming ways to correct the system not just through words but actions.”

Sponsored by the PNA’s Cultural Engagement Workgroup, this was the first in a series of movie screenings and discussions focusing on racial and social justice issues. The series explores society’s social institutions and how systems and behavior perpetuate and reinforce discriminatory practices and inequities. Another objective of these events is to provide a comfortable community space for education and thought – provoking conversations about important social topics.

The PNA looks forward to engaging community members through the viewing and discussion of the upcoming films in the series. Will AmeriCorps Make The Cut?

The AmeriCorps program, which places full-time volunteers at the PNA and community organizations across the country, could become a casualty of federal budget cuts. The budget passed by the House of Representatives cuts all funding to the Corporation for National Service, eliminating the AmeriCorps program and other service programs for seniors and youth.

The PNA currently has AmeriCorps members in three positions: an outreach coordinator, a senior center programming coordinator, and a sustainability coordinator. Members in these positions and other positions in the past have done community work worth far more than their cost to the PNA or the AmeriCorps program.

AmeriCorps members at other organizations serve diverse community needs like tutoring and mentoring disadvantaged youth, emergency response, literacy work, improving health services, protecting and restoring the environment, managing or operating after-school programs, and building organizational capacity.

At a time when cutting funding to many social service programs is inevitable, the AmeriCorps program is a good investment that leverages volunteer time and community funds far beyond its cost. AmeriCorps also provides meaningful and career-building work in a poor economy, particularly for young people who have been hit hard by persistent unemployment.

While the House budget will not be passed as it stands, any of its funding cuts will be up for negotiation. Now is the time to send the message that AmeriCorps is a good investment in our communities, and cutting funding to the program is short-sighted.

Here are some ways you can speak out:

• Sign this petition set up by AmeriCorps alums, telling your Senators not to vote to eliminate the program.

• Invite your elected representatives to visit a program that relies on AmeriCorps workers.

• Call you Senators and tell them how you feel. Both of the above websites include some ideas for what to say when you call.

• Write a letter to the editor of your local paper, stressing what AmeriCorps means to the community.

Aurora Commons

I had my own misgivings about Aurora when I moved to the area. It seemed to me like a highway, or a swiftly moving river without many crossings. But I found myself living on that highway, becoming acquainted with my neighbors and then transformed by those relationships. It turns out a number of other people living on or near Aurora Avenue are experiencing something similar, so we’ve been working to create a neighborhood living room, where we can participate together in a story of community. We’re calling it The Aurora Commons.

A lot of people ask what this place is. There isn’t an easy answer, because in many ways we’re just trying to put a roof over the surprisingly beautiful stuff that is already happening in the neighborhood. A few summers ago, for instance, we initiated a communal garden and weekly BBQs. The rhythm was birthed out of simple curiosity and a desire to know our neighbors, and has become a full-fledged festival resembling one of Tolkien’s secondary worlds. You see home-owning families sharing the table with families from nearby motels, a homeless woman chatting it up with someone visiting from out of town, a hopeless veteran mingling with an optimistic college student.

We want to continue creating these secondary worlds where people from all walks of life are recognizing one another as neighbors. That’s the motivation behind The Aurora Commons. You leave your status at the door.

People are catching wind of the mystery already. Most of the remodeling work has been done by volunteers from the neighborhood. In fact, not long ago a floor specialist named Ray noticed the stacks of hardwood awaiting installation. Fourteen consecutive volunteer days later, and with assistance from people inspired by his generosity, he backed away proudly from a gorgeous floor.

I overheard a conversation between Ray and a pessimistic passer-by. Ray was telling him about the vision, and the guy responded, “Oh, I gotcha, another place for people to get handouts.” Ray was quick to correct him. “It’s not like that here. This is a place for relationships, for everyone to share their lives and stories with one another.”

I recognize that the story of Aurora is not always uplifting. But those of us who have been digging in a little have discovered a wealth of life along the corridor. It is a highway, but there’s always another story. Aurora appears to us like a river. And not just an annoying obstacle between the ridge and the lake, this river’s bank is worth spending time along.

Last July we learned that the Washington State Historical Society Advisory Board recommended our Capital Campaign grant request of $995,000 for funding through the Heritage Capital Projects Fund; one of 29 projects that were recommended. Unfortunately, this fund was omitted in the Governor's proposed budget, due to tough choices we all know need to be made. In the case of the Heritage Capital Projects Fund, however, funds would not have been pulled from urgently needed health and human services. The fund is supported by bonds issued by the State.

This funding is critical to help us move forward with the renovation of the Phinney Neighborhood Center's Blue Building, making it accessible with an elevator, new restrooms and other ADA upgrades. Our vision is to create a living, enduring space that allows people of all ages and abilities to gather and share their lives, ideas and experiences.

Furthermore, the Norcliffe Foundation has pledged $500,000 in support of our project if we can have a building permit in place by the end of 2011 to begin construction in early 2012. Without state funding, we may not be able to begin construction and could lose the Norcliffe funding as well.

We need your help to ensure our project receives the funding to move forward.

PNA Wine Taste & Special Event

Don't miss the 21st annual PNA Wine Taste on Saturday, February 26, from 7:30-10 pm. Compare terrific wines while socializing with friends and neighbors. The event includes your choice of ten tastes of wine, fabulous hors d’oeuvres from Bill Drummond Catering and the Wine Taste committee and French jazz/samba music performed by Pourqoui Pas. There will be a wine store during the event giving tasters the opportunity to purchase some of the wines they are tasting.

Busy Night at the Phinney Center Gallery

Friday night was a busy night at the Phinney Center Gallery. At our opening reception for Easelstan 5 @ 10, we had a great crowd and fun event. Thank you to everyone who came out to support this wonderful group of artists from our community. If you didn't get a chance to attend the opening reception, the art will be on view in the Phinney Center Gallery until February 25th.

Check out this great article in today’s Seattle Times! As the founder of Neighbor Appreciation Day 17 years ago, I am delighted to read this kind of “news." Long-time PNA business member and Home Fair exhibitor, Michael Vacirca of LastingNest construction, is featured along with his neighbors. They and their children have created a micro-community centered around Salmon Bay Park. Read the story for more about their neighborliness and some of the great ideas other Ballard folks have for creating lasting connections with the folks close by. Neighbor Appreciation Day is Saturday, February 12. What will you do to get to know your neighbors, lend a helping hand, or express your thanks to the people who share your little corner of Seattle?

What Does PNA Mean To You?

The Phinney Neighborhood Association (PNA) can mean many different things to many different people. It can be the beating heart of the neighborhood where classes and programs are offered. It can be the shelter for hurried parents and their precious children in the form of its kids programs. It can be where you can find fresh local produce during the summer. It can be the warm heart of the citizens in the forms of the soup kitchen and the Greenwood Senior Center. It can also be the big blue building next to Red Mills Burger that you drive by everyday on the way to/from work.

I moved into the neighborhood a mere 2 years ago myself with my wife Skye. We used to live at Northgate in a townhouse that is perfect as a place to rest your head at night and store our stuff. What it is not is a place of stability and tranquility. When we started to look for a new house, Phinney Ridge and Greenwood immediately came to mind, and one of the biggest attractions to us about these neighborhoods is PNA and what it represents to the two of us. A gathering place for a real community that is not born out of homogeniality like what one might find in many suburbs, but out of conscious choice, real diversity and shared common values

As the community at large, PNA members, staff and board of directors work to create a vision for the upcoming years, I would love to hear from you as to what is PNA to you.

The Phinney Center Gallery is currently accepting submissions for the 2012 gallery schedule by visual artists working in 2D or 3D media for individual or group shows. Our gallery has 88 linear feet of gallery wall space, as well as display capacity for three-dimensional work in locked glass cases and pedestals. Priority consideration for gallery shows will go to artists working in the Puget Sound area who are not currently represented by a commercial gallery. There is no fee for application. Open House at the Phinney Neighborhood Preschool Co-op

The Phinney Neighborhood Preschool Co-op is hosting an open house on Sunday, February 13 from 1:00 to 3:00pm for the 2011-2012 Pre-K class. Interested families can meet teacher Sally Watkins, tour the Dragon Room, and learn more about the PNPC.

Easelstan Studios has been a busy hub of art-making for ten years. To celebrate, the five most recent Easelstan artists will put on an art show at the Phinney Center Gallery. The show will be up February 2-25.

Cultural Movie Events at the PNA

Movie Screening and Discussion: “The House We Live In” of the PBS series "Race: The Power of an Illusion."

In honor of Black History Month, the PNA will host a screening of “The House We Live In,” an episode from the PBS documentary series "Race: The Power of an Illusion." The one hour film will be followed by a facilitated discussion.

This will be the first in a series of monthly movie events between now and the end of June, hosted by the Cultural Engagement Workgroup at the PNA. The film series will explore society’s social institutions and how systems and behaviors perpetuate and reinforce discriminatory practices and inequities. Through screenings and facilitated discussions, the PNA intends to build a comfortable community space for education and thought – initiating conversations about important social topics. Members are encouraged to join us on that journey.

This series of films and discussions is also timely in view of the soon to be released 2010 Census data, which will further illustrate that the USA is becoming increasingly diverse. In the past, Census projections have stated that by the year 2050, there will be no minorities or majority race in the United States.

“One of the PNA's goals is to engage the community in meaningful conversations that build bridges of understanding and appreciation of differences,” says Executive Director, Lee Harper. “This movie series also gives all of us the opportunity to explore our feelings and perceptions about race, culture and social justice issues.”

In the fall of 2010, the PNA formed a staff-led workgroup called the Cultural Engagement Workgroup (CEW), with the goals of developing a long-term cultural engagement strategy here at the PNA. Members are encouraged to participate in CEW programs with the goal of increasing awareness and appreciation of similarities and differences in our community, which, in turn, will enable neighbors and staff to develop ways to work toward increasing equity and racial and social justice.
